First Time

  • Drink Tried: Spiced Cider Coffee (Latte Version)

On another day of no classes I decided I’d venture off to where Mount’s Head Center of Success man (his name’s Beau) recommended: M&H Beans. I’ve never heard of it until he mentioned it but I’m sure glad he told me about it.

The drive there was nice through some back roads into downtown where fall colors were beginning to bloom on trees. For the start of October, it was hot weather…near 80 degrees!

Anyway, I parked right in front of a mural. Marilyn Monroe, Bob Marley, and Judy Garland’s Dorothy took over the wall. My eyes followed the muraled brick wall to the coffee shop. It was tiny. This was just an order and leave sorta deal.

I walked my happy behind into the coffee shop and looked at the menu. A barista (I’m pretty sure it was the owner Hannah) came over and was very enthusiastic asking how I was and what I would like to order. I told her it was my first time and her face immediately lightened. “Welcome! Let me give you a lay of the land!” She said and explained that they are also a roastery (their products were against the wall to be sold and there was a roaster in the back).

The menu contained the usual what every coffee shop menu; however, she showed me a paper with their seasonal drinks. I looked and saw one of their special drinks had espresso and soda water (I really thought about getting it but I was like nahhh) and eventually became stumped on getting the Spiced Cider Coffee and Pumpkin Somethin’ or Other. With either drink you could get it as a latte or cold brew. I asked her which she recommended and she said the Cider one-so I went with that!

The Spiced Cider Coffee consisted of: housemade spiced apple cider syrup, espresso, and oat or whole milk. I, particularly, only like oat milk with brown sugar and espresso-I absolutely hate oat milk with anything else.

The Drink/Review

I looked around and even though the space was small…it was comfortable. The decor was lovely and even had a map of where they get their coffee. I was soon handed my drink and was told “I hope you have a great day.” That’s what I love. Usually I’ll be told ‘have a great day’ without them making eye contact or ‘have a good one’ but the extra “I hope” with the sincere genuineness really stood out to me. I can say the service here really stands with Portal West (both exemplary role models of what small business coffee shop service should be).

I tasted the drink and it was great but had a little zing to it because of the apple cider and espresso. Some sips weren’t really consistent with the cider flavor (which is why it’s a -.2 deduction) but overall, wonderful drink wonderful service!
